Fitness Courses From Prison
Everyone in prison works out but each of us is motivated by our own unique set of circumstances and emotions. When I arrived at United States Federal Penitentiary Allenwood back in May of 2001, I looked like a college kid that had gotten off at the wrong bus stop. My primary goal was to get bigger, faster and stronger as quickly as possible. I found a crew of guys that looked the way that I wanted to look and started working out with them. Dramatic results followed but I quickly realized that everyone had their own training methodologies which often conflicted with one another...so I set out to find the truth about training and nutrition.
Allenwood's Recreation Department had created a "Fitness Library" and filled it with a myriad of textbooks, manuals, VHS videos and DVD's all related to health and fitness. I invested countless hours there, day after day, until I'd studied every last resource available to me. Then I wrote to my family and friends requesting additional literature and publications. Over the years I managed to compile my own small fitness library that is still frequently updated with a variety of resources.
The opportunity for me to design and instruct my first fitness class (F.A.S.T. - Flex, Agility, & Stability Techniques) came from my boss who was the Supervisor of Recreation. The success I had with that class paved the way for others that followed. Each of those classes gave me additional program design experience and allowed me to witness first hand which training methods were most effective. It was down in those trenches that I built the foundation for what has become Prison Body Fitness.
Take a look back now at how it all got started and check out some of the "fun" we had at U.S.P. Allenwood over the years.
